I made a short trip to the Cove on Friday. I knew it would get crowded fast and the one way, 11 mile loop is not fun (for me) at bumper-to-bumper friendliness.

Arriving as the gate was opened at sunrise I passed the turkeys grazing in the horse pastures, heading directly to Hyatt Lane, hoping for a black bear.

I ran into Sam Hobbs, an accomplished Tennessee wildlife photographers, we talked a while, photographed a couple of young buck whitetail deer, in the field in front of us and then ...

I spent a few hours in the Cove this morning before the crush of folks poured in for the 75th Anniversary Celebration events. The place was "nuts"!

The Loop Road was open to car traffic this morning (normally closed until 10:00am on Wednesdays and Saturdays for bicycles). As usual there were few folks at the gates, waiting on the Rangers for the sunrise unlocking.

Tons of wild turkey (counted over 50) and the whitetail were grazing everywhere, we noticed many females that ...

Thursday 6/11- Hiked Craggy Gardens Pinnacle Trail and the Gardens Trail. The Rhododendron are in peak bloom. It was overcast but only a couple of people on the trails.

Friday 6/12 – Hiked the Kephart Prong Trail. One of my favorite “rushing water” trails. The sun finally came out so I decided to make an unplanned trip to the Tennessee side to Cades Cove. Lots of bear activity in the cove. I saw 2 sets of cubs and a couple of lone bears. After I left the cove the traffic was lite ...

Saw three otters at Abrams Falls yesterday just after noon. They swam up from the lower part of the pool, bobbing up and down like dolphins in the ocean. Then they turned and made their way over to the far side and scrambled up the rocks. Never saw otters before in the park; it was a real treat!

For those of you who think you've seen long trip reports... Maybe set aside a day or two for it. Sorry about the long winded-ness; this isn't for those who like quick, consice reports. For all others, enjoy. Photos are on their way.

Maundy Thursday

After hour upon hour of driving, we finally pulled into the overlook just inside the park on our way to Cataloochee. Even though I was already acclimated to scenic views by our trip through ...

We've all heard the Boy Scout motto: "Be prepared". At first glance it seems like very good advice like many of the knot-tier's saying and maxims, but I've discovered a glitch: what's the fun in it? Some of my best memories of early visits to the Smokies were how we improvised to make up for an item we forgot. I'll never forget how my dad used a sock and two umbrellas for a coffee maker...

I wrote this trip report back in '06:

--------------

I recently returned from a fall camping trip to Cosby with my father and sister last weekend (Oct 7&. Although we wanted to visit Cades Cove, we decided to escape the crowds by camping in the more remote Cosby campground. We planned on day hiking over the weekend, on Saturday going up Mt. Cammerer, and on Sunday hiking to Ramsey Cascades. When we arrived at the campground it was mostly empty, even though October is the second ...
